Forest in France
A forest is an area of at least 1/2 ha (fifty ares, 5,000 m²) with trees that can reach a height of more than 5 metres at maturity, a wood cover of more than 10% and an average width of at least 20 metres.
In metropolitan France, forests cover 17 million hectares, i.e. 31% of the territory, and have been growing steadily for over a century.
Almost 13 million hectares of woods and forests belong to private forest owners (3 million owners). The State, local authorities and public institutions own more than 4 million hectares.
The most wooded regions in France are Corsica, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. There are nearly 130 species of wood in France, divided between deciduous (67% of the stand), coniferous (21%) and mixed (12%).
